BACOLOD City – A firefighter was electrocuted while responding to a blaze in Villarante Subdivision, Barangay I (Poblacion), San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Monday.
Senior Fire Officer 3 Ricardo Catalan, also of San Carlos, died.
He touched a wire of the Northern Negros Electric Cooperative not knowing it was live, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.
His superior, Fire Senior Officer 4 Marilou De la Cruz, and fellow firefighters were unable to immediately help him, wary that they might get electrocuted as well. Later, they rushed him to a hospital in San Carlos, but the attending physician declared him dead.
The fire that started around 10:29 a.m. gutted 12 houses. The bureau was still trying to determine the cost of damage as of this writing./PN
