KALIBO, Aklan – Authorities have not monitored any imminent threat to the Asean Summit ministerial meetings in the island this month.
While there were reports on the presence of armed men, “[they] turned out negative after validation,” said Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tumnog, executive officer for the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion.
Police stations, especially in hinterland areas in the region, were enjoined to strengthen their defense against possible rebel attacks.
An encounter between alleged rebels and 61st IB soldiers on Feb. 7 in Tapaz, Capiz killed an Army corporal and injured two others.
The incident came after President Rodrigo Duterte terminated the peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines and the Justice department’s issuance of an immigration lookout bulletin order against the group’s consultants.
In Kalibo, “there were no sightings of armed men … contrary to reports,” said Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police head.
But he assured that “police and [their] intelligence units were continuously monitoring [possible] security threats.”
Police will deploy around 1,300 officers for the Asean Summit.
Personnel from the Army, the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard, and force multipliers will help secure the meeting venues and the hotels where the delegates will be staying.
“Floating assets” from the Navy will be on standby, while some vehicles will be rerouted.
Hotel security managers and front desk supervisors had undergone lectures on bomb identification and detection, while table-top exercises were held by a committee handling security, peace and order, emergency preparedness, and response. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
