MANILA – San Miguel Beermen center June Mar Fajardo added another trophy to his growing collection after capturing the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup Best Player of the Conference award.
The Pinamungahan, Cebu-native Fajardo won the top individual honor in the season-opening conference for the fifth time, his fourth in the All-Filipino Conference, after tallying 1,217 points.
Fajardo, a member of the Gilas Pilipinas national team, tied former Beermen and Meralco Bolts slotman Danilo Ildefonso with five PBA Best Player of the Conference trophies.
“Masaya tayo na nakuha natin ang BPC award,” said the 6-foot-10 Fajardo. “Pero mas nakatuon tayo sa championship kasi hindi natin alam kung kailan ulit babalik yung ganyang opportunity kaya ayaw naming sayangin.”
With the PBA-BPC coronation, Fajardo also moved closer to capturing a fourth straight MVP plum to join Alvin Patrimonio and Ramon Fernandez as the only four-time winners of the honor.
Coming in at second place in the PBA-BPC race is GlobalPort Batang Pier guard Terrence Romeo with 711 points, followed by Beermen’s Alex Cabagnot (556) and Arwind Santos (381) and Alaska Aces’ Calvin Abueva (370).
Meanwhile, the Beermen can clinch its third consecutive All-Filipino Conference title if it wins against the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in Game 5 of the best-of-seven finals series tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen surged to a 3-1 lead in the series following its 94-85 win over the Kings in Game 4 on Friday night behind the offense of Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross.
“I hope matapos na ito sa Game 5. Everybody’s very tired, from the players to the fans and the media,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria. “We need to rest. The second conference is just a week away after (this series).”/PN
