ILOILO City –Taguig City in Metro Manila is “below sea level” like Iloilo City but it has solved its problem on flooding, according to Councilor Joshua Alim.
He urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and City Engineer’s Office to copy Taguig’s anti-flooding strategy – impound the floodwater.
Beneath Taguig’s Burgos Circle at Fort Bonifacio is a five-storey deep water catchment, according to Alim, and during heavy rains, floodwater is impounded there.
The water is later pumped out into Manila Bay, he said.
This scheme has solved the frequent flooding in Taguig and DPWH and the City Engineer’s Office would do well to consider this, too, for Iloilo City, said Alim.
For three successive days since Saturday, several parts of the city got flooded due to heavy rains.
“I have long been suggesting the Taguig solution but they’re not listening,” said Alim.
DPWH and the City Engineer’s Office are not amenable to the suggestion, citing the prohibitive cost of building an underground water catchment, said the councilor.
“If Taguig City can do it, Iloilo City, can, too. Yes, they spent millions. If the city government of Iloilo don’t have the money, amat-amaton lang. I-identify ang pinakabaha nga area kag mabutang kita sang makaya ta. For example, unahon ang City Proper,” said Alim.
