‘Food poisoning’ downs 49 at Christmas party

BACOLOD City – At least 49 students were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning in Barangay Ma-ao, Bago City, Negros Occidental.

The victims, Grade 1 pupils of Ma-ao Elementary School in Bago City, experienced symptoms of suspected food poisoning on Thursday due to stomach pains, vomiting and dizziness, after eating spaghetti during their Christmas party.

The victims were initially rushed to the Barangay Ma-ao Clinic, but were later transferred to the Bago City District Hospital.
One of the victims, 57-year-old Tessie Cubos said she ate the spaghetti after her grandchild refused to eat.
Cubos claimed that she only ate three spoonfuls of the food, which she described to taste sour. At first, Cubos disregarded the taste, however, a few minutes later she started to experience stomach pains and vomiting.
The Bago City Health Office is investigating the catering service, which it did not identify./PN
