MANILA – Back-to-back Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix champion Foton Tornadoes will once again represent the country in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Women’s Club Championship in Kazakhstan in 2017.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. officially named the Tornadoes as the Philippine team in the prestigious regional tournament participated by Japan, China and Thailand, PSL president Ramon Suzara said.
“PSL has what it takes to send a strong team,” Suzara said. “The PSL Grand Prix served as the qualifier for the Asian Women’s Club Championship in Kazakhstan.”
Led by Lindsay Stalzer, Ariella Usher and MVP Jaja Santiago, the Tornadoes bagged the PSL Grand Prix crown with a two-game sweep over the Petron Tri-Activ Spikers in the finals.
Also in the Tornadoes lineup are Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Cherry Rondina, Ennajie Laure, Maika Ortiz, Rhea Dimaculangan, Angeli Araneta, Fatima General, Ivy Perez, Kara Acevedo, Patty Orendain, and Carol Cervesa.
During the 2016 edition of the AVC tournament in Manila in September, the Tornadoes finished seventh. The squad’s lone win in the tournament came at the expense of Hong Kong, 25-20, 25-14, 25-10./PN
