ILOILO City – Four persons were arrested for playing mahjong in Barangay Bagacay, San Rafael, Iloilo.

According to the police, they would be charged with illegal gambling.

The four, taken to the municipal police station on June 1, were Allan Ray Basco, Rosario Cartagena, Susan Dimzon, and Natividad Dimzon.

Policemen spotted the four playing mahjong around 4:45 p.m.

Mahjong is among the games listed in Presidential Decree 1602 that punishes illegal gambling. It is a tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty.

Commonly played by four players, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance and betting, thus it is considered illegal gambling./PN
