MANILA – Students enrolled in state universities and colleges (SUCs) should no longer pay tuition and other miscellaneous fees this second semester.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said no school fees will be collected this semester.
The government was supposed to implement Republic Act (RA) 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act starting school year 2018-2019. But according to the law’s coauthor Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, “Kinumpirma ko na (with CHED that) implemented na po ito this second semester.”
“So lahat ng mag-e-enroll this second semester dapat wala nang kinokolektang tuition at miscellaneous fees,” said Aquino.
A total of P40 billion has been allocated in the 2018 proposed national budget for the implementation of RA 10931 for the upcoming school year.
“Iyong mga staff natin at mga partners sa iba’t ibang lugar, tinitingnan na ang mga SUCs kung wala silang kokolektahing tuition at miscellaneous expenses,” said Aquino.
The senator, meanwhile, encouraged those who had dropped out to inquire with SUCs if they can finish their college course for free.
“Natutuwa kami dahil ang batas na ito ay hindi lang para sa kasalukuyang naka-enroll pero sa mga nag-dropout dahil puwede nilang ipagpatuloy ang kanilang pag-aaral nang libre,” said Aquino./PN
