ILOILO City – An official from the Philippine National Police (PNP) national headquarters is taking over the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) directorship Monday next week.
Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, the current director, was promoted to a “two-star” position in Camp Crame effective May 15.
Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne R. Binag will replace him, Gentiles confirmed.
“I [was] not relieved,” Gentiles told Panay News in a text message yesterday.
“Relief” would usually refer to an officer’s removal from their post due to an infraction or incompetence.
Gentiles clarified that he was designated to lead the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO) in Eastern Mindanao.
He said he is replacing Police Director Alex Ignacio, who retired yesterday.
“I thank the (PNP) Chief (Director General Ronald Dela Rosa) for this opportunity to be promoted to 2-star,” Gentiles said in the text message.
No official order or communication from Camp Crame regarding the new designations has been released as of press time.
A turnover of command will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday next week at the multipurpose building at Camp Martin Delgado, headquarters of the Western Visayas police, said Gentiles.
Binag was currently the chief of the Firearms and Explosives Office at Camp Crame.
He was a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1987.
Gentiles was assigned in Western Visayas after Dela Rosa –– newly appointed as PNP chief — removed the then regional director, Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz.
Diaz attracted controversy weeks before the national elections on May 9, 2016.
He was one of four police generals in active service seen in the company of men identified with then Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas at the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.
“We will be relentless in our internal cleansing efforts. We have to eliminate scalawags from within our ranks,” Dela Rosa then said in a strongly worded message to the 160,000-strong national police force.
Diaz and three other police generals — all in civilian clothes — were seen with retired PNP deputy director general Marcelo Garbo Jr. at the Novotel located at Araneta Center a few weeks before the May 9 elections.
Garbo was supporting Roxas’ presidential bid.
Diaz and Gentiles were classmates at the PMA.
Gentiles served as deputy director of the PNP’s Directorate for Intelligence, and then as police director of the Northern Mindanao Region./PN
