MANILA – The Gilas Pilipinas cruised to its third straight victory in the 2017 SEABA Cup by beating Malaysia, 106-51, on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Naturalized center Andray Blatche and Jeth Troy Rosario led the way with 13 points apiece for the Gilas, which tied the Indonesian national team on top of the standings with a 3-0 win-loss record.
Matthew Wright and Terrence Romeo added 12 points each, while Roger Pogoy and Jayson Castro had 10 points apiece for the Chooks To Go-backed national basketball team.
After Malaysia scored the opening basket of the match, Gilas unloaded 13 consecutive points courtesy of Castro, Pogoy and Blatche en route to building a huge 61-26 lead.
The Gilas continued its aggression in the second half with Wright, Romeo and Pogoy hitting their stride from the outside to build the largest lead of the match at 103-46 on a Calvin Abueva triple.
“We told them these guys will get up in your grill and pressure you. We were looking for a lot of layups and backdoor cuts to counter their pressure,” said Gilas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes.
Yee Heng top-scored with 12 points in 22 minutes off the bench for the 0-3 Malaysians, which is composed mostly of players that saw action for the BluStar Detergent in the PBA D-League.
After drawing a bye on Monday night, the Gilas will gun for its fourth straight victory when it faces Thailand at 7 p.m. tonight. It will be followed by matches against Vietnam on Wednesday and Indonesia on Thursday./PN
