MANILA – Chooks-To-Go Gilas Pilipinas turned on the heat in the fourth quarter to score 115-102 against Mono Vampire Basketball Club of Thailand in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup yesterday in Chenzhou, China.
With an 81-77 lead entering the fourth canto, Gilas unloaded back-to-back hits from Jeron Teng and Kiefer Ravena to make it an 8-point game but Thailand countered with a run to cut the deficit to 81-85.
The Philippines pulled away anew 91-82 after a triple by Carl Bryan Cruz but Thailand kept coming back behind import Michael Singletary to come to within 90-97.
Gilas went on a finishing 10-2 scoring run courtesy of Ravena, Teng and Cruz to widen the lead 107-92. The Thais had their last stand 102-109 before free throws by LA Revilla and Ravena sealed the win for the Filipinos.
Cruz led the way with 28 points, with eight 3-point conversions, for the Philippines, which moved up to first place in the Group A standings with a 2-1 win-loss record.
American Isaiah Austin added double-double 27 points and 19 rebounds, while Ravena and Teng contributed 24 and 17 points, respectively, for Gilas, which bounced back from an 82-89 loss to Sarreyet Ramallah of Palestine on Saturday night.
Singletary, who previously played for Barako Bull and San Miguel Beermen in the PBA, finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds, while Filipino-American Jason Brickman had 17 markers for Mono Vampire, which slid to 1-1.
Gilas will take a break today before returning to action on Tuesday evening against Petrochimi Bandar Imam BC of Iran./PN
