MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings import Justin Brownlee insisted that their rematch with Meralco Bolts in the PBA Governors’ Cup finals this year will be different than last year.
In an interview after Kings’ 115-105 win over TNT KaTropa Sunday night, Brownlee said Bolts is now a “different” team, especially with import Allen Durham improving his game and Jared Dillinger uninjured.
“Durham is a beast,” Brownlee said. “I gotta give it to him. He’s just been a beast, he’s been unstoppable. That’s why he’s in the finals and his team. I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can slow him down.”
“If I was him (Dillinger), and I was that team, I would want also Ginebra in the finals,” he added. “That just shows his fight … you know, maybe get some revenge. I would be the same way if I was him, so I respect that.”
Bolts also bolstered its lineup by adding gunners Garvo Lanete, Ranidel de Ocampo and rookie Eduardo Daquioag.
Brownlee, now on his third tour of duty with Ginebra, may be best remembered for his game-winning triple in Game 6 of the 2016 Governors’ Cup finals that handed Kings its first PBA title in eight years.
“I definitely remember that game-winning shot but I’m just trying to move on from it,” he said. “It was a great memory, nothing can take that away, but I’m just moving on.”
“A lot of people still talk about it, but this is a new year, new conference. Whatever we did last year, it doesn’t matter in this time. I’m just trying to move forward from that,” he added.
The best-of-seven finals series starts on Friday at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
If the series reaches Games 5 to 7, the matches will all be held at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan./PN
