MANILA – The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings went on a huge finishing run to score a 73-62 win over the Star Hotshots in Game 3 of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals on Monday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Trailing 60-59 after a basket by Hotshots’ Mark Andy Barroca, the Kings went on a huge 14-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from Sol Mercado and Japeth Aguilar to build a 73-62 lead.
Mercado led the way with 16 points, including two three-point baskets in the final quarter, for the Kings, which avoided a slide to a 0-3 slate in the race-to-four semis series.
Aguilar chipped in double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Mark Caguioa, LA Tenorio and Earl Scottie Thompson combined 22 points for the reigning Governor’s Cup titlist.
The Kings opened the match with a 17-4 lead behind Aguilar and Tenorio, but the Hotshots made its move courtesy of Allein Maliksi and Ian Sangalang to come to within 21-14.
The Kings quickly answered back to maintain a double-digit edge on baskets by Aguilar and Kevin Ferrer. But the Hotshots leaned on Sangalang and Jalalon to come to within 33-29 at halftime.
The Kings maintained the lead early in the third canto behind conversions by Ferrer and Jervy Cruz but the Hotshots rallied back on baskets by Paul Lee, Barroca and Peter June Simon to take a slim the gap at 51-50.
Both teams had tight exchange in the final quarter with the Kings relying on Earl Scottie Thompson and Caguioa, while the Hotshots on Lee and Barroca with the latter claiming a marginal lead late in the game.
Jean Marc Pingris top-scored with double-double 12 points and 18 rebounds for the Hotshots, which struggled heavily with its shots due to a tight defense by the Kings in the entire game./PN
