MANILA – After being badly beaten by the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Cup finale, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings is eyeing redemption in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup by bringing back Justin Brownlee as import.
Kings head coach Tim Cone admits that enlisting the 6-foot-5 Brownlee is a gamble for their campaign in a conference where teams are allowed to sign reinforcements as tall as 6-foot-10.
Brownlee, who is coming off a stint with the Mighty Sports in the Dubai basketball tournament, keyed in the Kings’ title conquest in the 2016 PBA Governor’s Cup.
“We’ll go out and play. We’re gonna be a small lineup with Justin as our import but we have some ideas at how we’re gonna play and we’ll work it through, see how it works,” said Cone.
Cone added that compounding the Kings problems is the continued absence of 7-footer Gregory Slaughter, who will be returning in the Governor’s Cup, and Joe Devance, who will go under the knife for a knee injury.
“(Greg) won’t be available,” Cone said. “I don’t see him coming back until the third conference. If he comes back earlier, that would be a bonus. Right now, our mindset (for him) is third conference.”
“Joe will also be missing time as he’s set to go under the knife for a plantar fasciitis tear which he endured during the Philippine Cup playoffs,” added the 19-time PBA champion coach.
With the absence of Slaughter and having an undersized import in Brownlee, Cone said he will utilize his big men Japeth Aguilar, Jervy Cruz, Dave Marcelo, Raymon Jamito and Jericho de Guzman to guard the other team’s taller imports./PN
