VIGAN, Ilocos Sur – Western Visayas bucked a slow start to score 22-25, 25-15, 25-16 over Region 12 in secondary girls volleyball of the 61st Palarong Pambansa on Monday at the Sto. Domingo Gym.

Girl spikers from Region 6 made it two in a row with a 25-11, 25-14 victory over Region 2 later in the day behind the heroics of Shane Carmona and Erika Deloria.

In the first game, after an error-filled opening set, WV turned to Deloria in the second frame as they raced to an early double-digit edge before thwarting Region 12’s late rally.

Deloria stepped up anew in the deciding set along with Joan Marie Monares, Marianne Sotomil and Alyssa Bertolano as WV surged to a 21-10 start and never looked back.

“Good thing Erika stood up for us,” said Region 6 mentor Ian Macariola. “Our usual scorers were very off. We also had a lot of errors, especially in the first set. There are still a lot of things to work on.”

In elementary girls volleyball, Region 6 split its matches – first, a 25-6, 25-9 domination over Caraga before bowing to Calabarzon in three sets. In elementary boys, WV edged CAR in three sets.

Meanwhile WV’s secondary boys basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 49-53 defeat at the hands of Caraga at the San Juan Gymnasium.

Led by Mark Nonoy, Jean Raven Beliran and Jesse Sullano, the WV cagers erased an early deficit but Caraga responded with clutch conversions, handing its opponent its first defeat.

In elementary boys basketball, WV players scored a 61-56 victory over Davao behind Johanan Castiller II and Joshua Dignadice./PN
