MANILA – Global-Cebu survived a shootout with Singapore’s Geylang International in the preliminary round of the 2017 RHB Singapore Cup at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.

With their victory Wednesday night, Global prevented a shutout from the annual football event after the 0-1 defeat of Ceres-Negros to Hougang United Cheetas on Tuesday.

Global will advance to the two-leg quarterfinals against a still unidentified opponent.

Geylang gained the early lead as Yuki Ichikawa headed a missed attempt by Safirul Sulaiman in the 15th minute. Global quickly equalized the match with a conversion from Darryl Roberts four minutes later.

A few possessions later, Roberts converted his second goal of the match to give Global a 2-1 lead. Geylang managed to tie the count at the half with Victor Coto’s hit.

Global became aggressive when the second half began. Roberts completed a hat-trick after draining a miss shot by Hikaru Minegishi before OJ Clarino gave the Philippine side a 4-2 edge on his hit from a Roberts’ miss.

But Geylang executed a late run in the regulation period with back-to-back conversions from Gabriel Quak and Ricardo Sendra to tie the count at 4 and force an extension period.

With both teams failing to break the tie in the extension, the match ended up in a shootout with Geylang’s Shahfiq Ghani and Global’s Roberts exchanging goals for a 1-1 count.

But Geylang committed three misses from Faritz Abdul Hameed, Sendra and Quak while Global’s Wesley Dos Santos and Paolo Bugas made their shots for a 3-2 final score./PN
