MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier opened negotiations with a number of teams as it leaned toward granting the request of star guard Terrence Romeo to trade him before the PBA Philippine Cup starts next month.
Batang Pier was in deep talks with PBA Governors’ Cup runner-up Meralco Bolts to ship the Gilas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team mainstay in exchange for Baser Amer and Chris Newsome.
But both teams have yet to come to terms with any deal. Bolts head coach Norman Black was reluctant to let go of Newsome, whom he uses as one of the defensive guards along with veteran Jared Dillinger.
Batang Pier also negotiated with TNT KaTropa but they failed to agree when the latter refused to part ways with Filipino-Tongan center Moala Tautuaa.
Romeo, a former Far Eastern University Tamaraws stalwart, first requested Batang Pier trade him to a contending team during the Commissioner’s Cup but failed to find a trading partner.
His dissatisfaction with GlobalPort was evident at the Governors’ Cup, especially in their do-or-die game against Blackwater Elite, when he got himself ejected after throwing the ball on import Henry Walker.
GlobalPort drafted Romeo No. 5 overall during the 2013 PBA Draft. In his four years of stay with the team, the farthest he went was in the semifinals of the 2016 Philippine Cup./PN
