MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier averted another endgame collapse as it scored a 97-89 win over the Meralco Bolts in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Terrence Romeo led the way with 27 points, including three 3-point baskets, for the Batang Pier, which moved up to a 4-3 win-loss slate in the standings to tie with the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Rommel Niño Canaleta added 13 points, while John Billy Mamaril and Mike Cortez chipped in 12 points apiece for the Batang Pier, which snapped its two-game losing skid.
The Bolts started strong in the game for an early 13-9 lead, but the Batang Pier leaned on Romeo to tie the score at 14-all before surging ahead at 26-19 on conversions by JR Quinahan and Aaron Aban.
The Batang Pier continued its assault in the second frame to build its largest lead at 40-24 on triples by Aban and Cortez. But the Bolts went to Reynel Hugnatan and Jonathan Grey to come to within 51-41 at halftime.
The Batang Pier maintained its double-digit edge early in the third frame on hits by Romeo and Stanley Pringle but the Bolts responded with a huge run behind Grey and Eduardo Daquioag to come to within 72-71.
The Bolts tied the score at 74-all early in the final frame, but the Batang Pier went on a 9-2 blast courtesy of Romeo for an 83-76 edge. The Bolts refused to give up as it trimmed the deficit to 85-82 on a triple by Hugnatan.
But timely hits from Batang Pier’s Cortez and Canaleta gave them an 89-84 lead before bringing it up to eight markers with just under a minute left in the game behind Quinahan and Romeo.
Negrense Hugnatan top-scored with 23 points, while rookie Grey added 18 markers for the Bolts, which suffered its fourth consecutive defeat to slide down to a 2-5 win-loss record./PN
