MANILA – Officials of the Social Security System (SSS) have been urged to justify their high salaries by delivering sufficient retirement income for its more than 33 million members.
Sen. Richard Gordon said SSS paid its high-ranking officials an annual bonus of P5 million, or P450,000 a month each.
A hefty salary for these executives gives them no reason to increase collection rate efficiency and expand market base, Gordon said.
“When you pay somebody well, you expect value for money. We do not mind paying somebody a high salary kung babalik siya na mas mataas ang ibabalik sa tao na pension dahil nag-iisip sila sa board. Hindi lamang ‘yung ba-boundary lang sila, ngunit gagawan ng paraan para ma-increase ang benepisyo ng tao,” the chief of the government corporations panel added.
Gordon asked the SSS to be “more aggressive” in increasing membership and retirement savings so they would not go bankrupt once the P2,000 across-the-board hike in the monthly pension of SSS retirees is passed into law.
“We cannot act on fear. Dapat kung magpapaipon tayo ng tao in the nature of forced savings, dapat mayroong magandang kapalit. It should be transformational because what I think here is that we’re just transactional,” the senator explained.
He said he is hoping the measure seeking to increase the SSS pension would be enacted into law before Christmas./PN
