MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier came up with a big endgame run to stave off Kia Picanto 108-91 in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

After losing its early double-digit advantage, GlobalPort went on a huge run on back-to-back triples by Stanley Pringle and inside hits by Sean Anthony and Joseph Gabayni for a 98-87 lead.

Kia tried to make a last run but GlobalPort got conversions from Jeric Teng, Julian Sargent and Juan Nicolas Elorde for a 17-point advantage with under a minute left.

Anthony and Kelly Nabong posted 21 points each. Pringle added 15 markers while rookie Sargent chipped in 12 for Batang Pier (5-5).

May ganoon eh (losing-your-lead momentum), pero bumalik rin naman sa amin,” said GlobalPort head coach Alfredo Jarencio. “It was a total team effort. Gusto talaga nila pumasok sa playoffs.”

Reden Celda finished with 21 points, rookie Jon Jon Gabriel had double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Rashawn McCarthy had 14 points for Picanto (1-9).

In the second game, Blackwater Elite survived a woeful free-throw shooting to escape Phoenix Fuel Masters 83-78 and remain in contention for the quarterfinals.

Even with a disastrous 20-of-40 shooting from the free-throw line, Elite managed to pull off the come-from-behind victory with huge fourth quarter performances from Michael Digregorio and John Paul Erram.

Digregorio, Rey Mark Belo and Raymar Jose finished with 14 points apiece while Erram and Shej Roi Sumang had 12 points each for Elite (5-6). Fuel Masters dropped to 4-6./PN
