MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier survived an endgame run by Phoenix Fuel Masters to score 100-91 in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup.
Import Murphy Holloway debuted with 29 points and 26 rebounds for GlobalPort, which moved up to tie with Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 1-1.
Terrence Romeo added 21 markers while Ryan Arana and Stanley Pringle contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Batang Pier, which bounced back from a 98-96 loss to Painters last week.
Batang Pier waxed hot early on Wednesday night, building a lead as high as 75-45 midway in the third quarter, but Fuel Masters retaliated with a strong run to come to as close as 88-83.
Holloway and Romeo came to the rescue with clutch conversions to increase the advantage 94-85 with just 31 seconds left.
“We enjoyed the lead so much that everybody was doing their own thing,” said GlobalPort head coach Franz Pumaren said. “Phoenix gave us a bit of a scare, but with our veterans, we’re able to execute what we had to do.”
Fuel Masters dropped to 2-1.
Import Eugene Phelps led the way with 32 points and 17 rebounds while rookie Joseph Eriobu and JC Intal added 11 points each.
Action resumes in Antipolo City today with TNT Katropa vs KIA Picanto in the first game at 4:15 p.m. and Star Hotshots vs Alaska Aces at 7 p.m./PN
