‘Graduating’ councilors bid farewell

ILOILO City – Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) who are exiting the city council by June 30 took to the podium to say goodbye and thank colleagues and the public on June 15, the last session of the 2016-2019 SP.

Councilors Plaridel Nava, Joshua Alim and Leizl Zulueta-Salazar said they were grateful to supporters.

Nava described his nine years of service as “colorful” with its ups and downs, though he overcame them all.

“For sure, the fight continues for Iloilo city. The advocacies that we have such as against Panay Electric Co. and illegal drugs will continue. We will not yield,” declared Nava.

Nava ran for vice mayor in the recent May 13 midterm elections but lost.

Alim thanked the SP secretariat, the media, colleagues and the 74,000 city residents who voted for him in the recent elections though he lost the congressional race.

“I appreciate the Ilonggos who believe in me. I can still help in my private capacity. This is not the end. I will return,” said Alim.

He estimated to have authored “3,000 resolutions and 100 ordinances” in the 18 years that he served as city councilor.

According to Alim, he would now focus on his profession as a lawyer. He is also a licensed realtor.

For her part, Salazar, who failed in her bid for a third consecutive term in the SP, thanked fellow councilors for being supportive.

“Maski different ang aton stands at times but we here in the city council worked together as one,” said Salazar.

The lady councilor also thanked the public for giving her the opportunity to serve Iloilo City.
