BACOLOD City – Grain bugs are now festering rice plantations in the 4th District of Negros Occidental, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said.
The rice pest that wreaked havoc in rice fields in Sipalay City in the 6th District was spotted in several hectares in Cauayan and Pontevedra towns and La Carlota City, said OPA head Japhet Masculino.
Masculino said they were still waiting for the damage assessment on the latest infestation in the south, the “rice granary” of the province.
The OPA already sought help from the Bureau of Plant Industry on how to deal with the destruction and prevent it from further spreading, he said.
Masculino called on farmers to take extra precaution – make sure their fields are free from grain bugs before they plant.
Meanwhile, the OPA head revealed that insurance under the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. now covers grain bug infestation.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. lobbied for the inclusion, he said.
Grain bug infestation in Sipalay City last year resulted in more than P8 million worth of losses. The incident prompted Marañon to push for its inclusion in crop insurance./PN
