‘Green guards’ secure plazas, Iloilo Esplanade

ILOILO City – The city government hired 30 “green guards” to secure public plazas and the Iloilo Esplanade from vandals.

“Their primary duty is to protect most especially ornamental plants. They patrol their areas,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas.

The mayor expressed alarm over the deliberate destruction of plants at public plazas and the esplanade.

These “green guards” recently underwent a five-day “paralegal seminar workshop on anti-littering” conducted by City Environment and Natural Resources Office. They were authorized to apprehend vandals and litterbugs.

“They bring with them citation tickets,” said Treñas.

The mayor recently announced a P50,000 reward to whoever could give information leading to the arrest of vandals who savaged palm trees at the Iloilo Esplanade.
“I am willing to spend money para madakpan ang naga-vandalize kag nagapatay sa mga tanum,” he said.
The reward will be from his personal funds, he stressed.

The vandalizing of the esplanade has long been a problem. During the administration of then mayor Jose Espinosa III, plants were uprooted but the culprits had not been identified and arrested./PN
