Guimaras reopens to people from other parts of Region 6

Guimaras’ tourism industry has been marred by tragedy as of late – the loss of life due to a series of unexpected squall surges in the Iloilo Strait still fresh in our collective minds. But in my heart of hearts, I know this hardy province of the Manggahan Festival will be back up on its feet in no time.

JORDAN, Guimaras – The provincial government of Guimaras has lifted the restriction on the entry of people from other parts of Region 6.

Western Visayans may now freely enter Guimaras for essential and non-essential purposes such as visiting tourist destinations, said Vice Gov. Edward John Gando.

He, however, stressed that visitors should not have signs and symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), not a probable or suspect case, and not a close contact of a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Visitors must also fill out health declaration cards for future contact tracing if necessary.

Prior to the lifting of the entry restriction, only the following are allowed into Guimaras:

* those working in the island province

* those delivering  basic services

* emergency cases

“Subong puede na makasulod bisan ang imo tinutuyo ma-bisita, ma-bike or makadto sa pila ka mga tourist destinations,” Gando told Panay News.

As for people outside Region 6 wanting to enter Guimaras for non-essential purposes, a negative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test result is required.

Gando said the lifting of the entry restriction is in preparation for the so-called “new normal” and the pump-priming of the province’s economy “following man sang pronouncement sang Department of Health nga ready na ang probinsya…kay sang san-o to may ocular inspection man sila.”

He described as “manageable” the COVID-19 cases in Guimaras and the whole Region 6.

As of Nov. 19, Guimaras recorded 206 COVID-19 cases (cumulative) of which 179 already recovered while three died, leaving only 24 active cases.

Ten of the active cases were in the town of San Lorenzo, nine in Jordan, two in Buenavista, two in Nueva Valencia, and one in Sibunag.

Also, 13 of the active cases were in quarantine facilities in Guimaras, one on home quarantine, two hospitalized in Iloilo City, and eight quarantined in Iloilo City./PN
