ILOILO City – Guimaras is looking forward to be declared a drug-free province.

Gov. Samuel Gumarin said the provincial government is hopeful of the result of the assessment conducted by the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The verdict will be known on Jan. 14 during PRO-6’s “Padyak Kontra Droga” activity in Guimaras – a public awareness campaign on the evils of illegal drugs. Participants will ride on bikes and go around.

Gumarin said PRO-6 director Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles is coming over together with a DILG official.

The governor was hopeful his province would be the second in the country to be declared drug-free, next to Bataan.

There were no big suppliers of illegal drugs in Guimaras, no illegal drug laboratories and very few drug users, he stressed.

Of the 314 suspected drug personalities in the province, 235 or 78 percent were already apprehended, said Gumarin.

He also said only eight of the 82 identified high-value drug targets have not been caught.

The Guimaras police recorded around 600 drug surrenderers last year and they all underwent community-based rehabilitation.

“A drug-free status would be good to our tourism industry,” said Gumarin.

Guimaras is known for its sweet mangoes, pristine beaches and dive sites.

Gumarin also noted the drop in Guimaras’ crime figure.

“These are good indicators of our social development,” said Gumarin./PN
