GUIMARAS – Sea travel, face-to-face classes, and work in provincial government offices were suspended or restricted across Guimaras on February 6 as Tropical Storm (TS) “Basyang” continued to affect the province with adverse weather conditions.
Provincial authorities advised the public to avoid unnecessary sea travel and to prioritize safety as strong winds and rough seas persisted.
Under the sea travel advisory issued by the provincial government, passenger vessels and motorboats operating along the Guimaras–Iloilo City route were allowed to carry only up to 50 percent of their authorized passenger capacity, in accordance with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)-issued Passenger Ship Safety Certificate.
Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels exceeding 300 gross tonnage were permitted to operate provided they did not exceed 75 percent of their authorized cargo capacity, as indicated in their MARINA-issued Tonnage Measurement Certificate.
All voyages between Sebaste Port in Sibunag, Guimaras, and Pulupandan Port in Negros Occidental were cancelled until further notice.
Sea travel was strictly limited from sunrise to sunset, with vessels required to arrive at their destinations at least 30 minutes before sunset. Authorities also warned that voyages may be temporarily suspended anytime weather conditions worsen.
Coastal communities, fisherfolk, and operators of small sea craft were strongly advised to refrain from sea-related activities to prevent accidents and loss of life.
Meanwhile, face-to-face classes at all levels—both public and private—were suspended across the province on February 6 pursuant to Executive Order No. 18 signed by Governor Ma. Lucille L. Nava, MD. The suspension covers early childhood, elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
The governor also ordered the suspension of work in all provincial government offices effective 12 noon of the same day to ensure the safety of government employees.
Offices involved in disaster response and emergency operations, peace and order, health and medical services, and other frontline and essential services were directed to continue operations.
The suspension of work in national government agencies, private companies, and private offices was left to the discretion of their respective heads, taking into account the safety of their personnel.
Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, monitor official advisories, and comply with safety measures as TS “Basyang” continues to affect the province./PN
