MANILA – As part of security preparations for the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) was banning firearms until Nov. 15.
Permits to carry firearms outside of residence were suspended in Metro Manila and regions 3 (Central Luzon) and 4A (Calabarzon), according to PNP director general Ronald dela Rosa.
“It is in line with the commitment of the government to ensure the safety of the heads of state and delegates of the ASEAN Summit to be held in Metro Manila, Clark in Pampanga, and Los Baños in Laguna,” dela Rosa said in a statement.
Members and officers of the PNP, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcement agencies in proper uniform were exempted from the gun ban, dela Rosa clarified.
Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior and Local Government stopped the operations of all types of sea vessels at the Manila Bay from Nov. 5 to 16.
The Interior department has set up a “no sail zone” at the vicinity waters of the H2O Hotel in Manila to the OKADA Hotel at the New Seaside Drive in Parañaque City, said officer-in-charge Catalino Cuy.
“No vessel shall be allowed to pass through that part of the Manila Bay for 12 days,” said the department head.
“Maximum maritime security is part of our safety preparations to ensure that the short stay of our delegates will be as peaceful, safe and secure as possible,” he said.
During the same period, the shoreline from the H2O Hotel to the mouth of Pasig River will be a “controlled zone.”
All vessels coming in and out of the area will be escorted by Philippine Coast Guard patrol boats, Cuy said.
“We are covering all fronts because the safety and security of our delegates is our primordial concern,” he said. “We request the full cooperation and understanding of our seafarers so that the upcoming ASEAN Summit will be safe and incident-free.”
