BACOLOD City –Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. vowed to find means to support marang producers from Barangay Colonia Divina, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
Producers from the village brought the fruits and their by-products to the capitol here for the Marang Festival from Sept. 16 to 17.
Other fruits like pineapples, also produced in Barangay Colonia Divina, were also sold in six festival booths.
The barangay already held its first MarangYagangyang Festival on Sept. 1.
More than 100,000 marang trees are growing across the village, Barangay Captain Johnny Buhayanpreviously said.
They are being intercropped with sugarcane, banana, rice, pineapple, and root crops, he said.
“Marang is abundantly available every August and September, when it’s ‘dead season’ for [sugar production],” said Buhayan.
During marang season, the barangay can produce at least 3 tons of the fruit a day — and sells them for only P1 to P5 per piece at the city proper and neighboring areas.
Marañonwants to improve the lives of marangproducers.
He promised them support for “value-adding,” or the production of more by-products, and to bring them closer to the market to “close the gap of prices.”
