SAN JOSE, Antique – A team from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) assessed a landslide-hit area in Barangay Pamandayan, Hamtic, Antique.

It gave the area a “very high landslide and flood susceptibility” rating.

Provincial ENR Officer Andres Untal informed barangay and municipal officials of the assessment and pushed for coordinated intervention.

The DENR team, which included geologist Shimpei Francisco and Science Research Specialist Eliaflor Bulawin of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region 6, emphasized that areas with a “high” to “very high” landslide susceptibility rating must not have dwellings or houses.

If there are residents, their evacuation is highly recommended.

Such areas are also not suitable for commercial, industrial, residential (subdivisions), and institutional developments.

Evacuation centers should not be established on them, too, the team added.

For the landslide-hit area in Barangay Pamandayan, the team recommended putting up landslide warning signage.

Critical facilities such as powerlines and roads may be allowed but appropriate engineering intervention measures must be implemented, with continuous monitoring.

Since the area is also rated as “very high” for flood susceptibility, the team said all people, except disaster response personnel, should not be in this zone during “impending flood events”.

For flood mitigating structures, DENR recommended that the local government unit seek the technical expertise of the Department of Public Works and Highways. (DENR, PIA-Antique/PN)
