BACOLOD City – Barangay Handumanan has passed Food Safety Ordinance of 2016 to regulate the operation of street food vendors.
The City Health Office said that more than a hundred pupils of Handumanan Elementary Schools 1 and 2 were hospitalized due to food poisoning resulting to cholera and amoeba last year.
The ordinance aims to address the problem on “negligent” street food vendors outside the schools. It also aims to protect the public from food-borne and water-borne illnesses and unsanitary, unwholesome or adulterated food.
Further, the ordinance hopes to establish policies in addressing food safety hazards and developing appropriate standards.
Any person who shall violate any provision of the ordinance shall pay P300 for first offense, P400 for second offense, and P500 for the succeeding offense.
Handuman village chief Ma. Febe Legaspi attested the ordinance on March 8.
Republic Act No. 10611 or the Food Safety Act states that “the local government unit shall also be responsible for street food sale, including ambulant vending.”/PN
