Healthy lifestyle campaign pushed

BACOLOD City – A proposed ordinance establishing a healthy lifestyle campaign within the city’s 61 barangays was passed in the third and final reading of the Sangguniang Panglungsod last week.

Once signed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia, it will be known as “Bacolod Healthy Lifestyle Campaign Ordinance.”

Councilor Em Ang, author of the proposed ordinance, said there is an urgent need to intensify the promotion of healthy lifestyle to prevent and control cases of obesity and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) among children and adults.

“Healthy lifestyle means a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early,” she said.

Ang added these lifestyle diseases will be prevented through campaigns on healthy eating, physical activity and wellness programs.

She also noted the 2016 World Health Organization’s data, which shows 68% of the total mortality rate in the Philippines is due to NCDs.

The city councilor said the government recognizes the promotion of health and welfare of our people as one of the primary concerns of the city by increasing awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyle among the general public.

“The city government will appropriate an annual P1-million fund for this program,” she said.

Cited on the provisions of the ordinance, a physical exercise routine every after flag ceremony will be implemented in every public elementary, secondary and senior high schools in the city including all city government offices and barangays./PN
