ILOILO City – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) radar station in Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro district recorded a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius at 1 p.m. yesterday.

It immediately issued a public warning, particularly to those living in areas surrounding or near its radar station, including those in nearby municipalities in Iloilo Province, and the island-province of Guimaras.

“This is the highest heat index recorded so far this year,” said Engr. Ferdinand Rubin Jr., a weather specialist at PAGASA Iloilo.

The heat index indicates the level of discomfort an average person may feel due to the combined effect of temperature and humidity.

According to PAGASA Iloilo, the heat index reached 40 degrees Celsius at 11 a.m. yesterday, 42 degrees Celsius at noon, 43 degrees Celsius at 1 p.m., and 42 degrees Celsius at 2 p.m.

“Once the heat index reaches 42 degrees Celsius, it falls into the danger category,” said Rubin.

Intense heat may lead to heat cramps, exhaustion, and a high probability of heat stroke with continuous sun exposure. It could also exacerbate existing health conditions.

However, Rubin noted that other radar stations, including those in Dumangas, Iloilo; Roxas City; Mambusao, Capiz; and La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, might report different heat index values at the same times.

Rubin attributed the current heat wave to El Niño, the start of the hot and dry season, and easterly winds, or warm air currents from the Pacific Ocean, predicting the heat would persist until April or May.

As a safety measure, PAGASA Iloilo recommends that the public stay hydrated, seek shade, avoid strenuous activities under the sun, use an umbrella for protection, and wear light clothing to minimize heat absorption, among other precautions./PN
