BACOLOD City – Department of Interior and Local Government undersecretary Jesus Hinlo told sugar leaders to meet with Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol regarding the pronouncement of President Rodrigo Duterte to abolish the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
Hinlo said Piñol may be the “right person” to help the sugar leaders in relaying their concern to Duterte.
Hinlo believed that Duterte’s statement was a result of finding out that some SRA consultants were receiving “big amounts” monthly.
“We have to study well the implications of SRA’s abolition,” said Hinlo.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod SP on Sept. 13 approved a resolution appealing for Duterte’s reconsideration on SRA’s abolition.
Councilor Em Ang, author of the resolution, said the abolition will be disadvantageous to the sugar industry in the Negros Island.
The Phillipine Sugarcane Industry contributes at least P70 billion to the national economy every year.
Ang said 65 percent of the contribution comes from Visayas, specifically from the Negros Island.
The SRA was created under Executive Order 18 dated May 28, 1986 to promote the development of the sugar industry.
Republic Act 10659, or the Sugarcane Industry Development Act of 2015, mandates the SRA and other government entities to “promote the competitiveness of the sugarcane industry and maximize the utilization of sugarcane resources, and improve the incomes of farmers and workers, through improved productivity, product diversification, job generation and increased efficiency of sugar mills.”/PN
