BACOLOD City – The House committee on suffrage and electoral reform will hold a hearing on the bills seeking to postpone the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, Rep. Greg Gasataya told Panay News yesterday.
The committee hearing scheduled on March 12 will tackle the bills that Rep. Johnny Pimentel (Surigao del Sur) and Rep. Reynaldo Umali (Oriental Mindoro) have separately filed.
Pimentel seeks to move the local elections to October 2018 while Umali wants to suspend the elections until May 2019.
Rep. Sherwin Tugna (Citizens’ Battle Against Corruptionparty-list) will preside the hearing.
“I do not know what the sentiments in the Congress are. This is the first time [the poll postponement] will be discussed openly,” said Gasataya, who received information about the hearing just yesterday.
No Senate bill has been so far filed seeking to postpone the barangay and SK polls, said Gasataya.
The barangay and SK elections were postponed two times already. The October 2016 polls were first deferred to October 2017, and then to May this year.
Gasataya said it is still “premature” to speculate what will be the result of the hearing./PN
