ILOILO City – Media organizations and universities are joining the nationwide commemoration of the massacre in Ampatuan, Maguindanao that killed 58 people, including 32 journalists, seven years ago today.
Among them are National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Iloilo, Iloilo Press Club, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Iloilo, Iloilo Provincial Capitol Press Corps, Iloilo City Hall Press Corps, and communication students and faculty.
This year’s commemoration has the theme “Stand Up for Journalism, Justice Now.”
This afternoon a candle-lighting ceremony will be held at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV, Miag-ao and Iloilo City campuses) and the University of San Agustin (USA) on General Luna Street.
The USA Publications is organizing the 6 p.m. event at the Plaza de San Agustin.
The following groups are organizing the 5 p.m. candle-lighting near the Oblation at UPV-Iloilo City: University Student Council, College of Management Student Council, Junior Executive Society, Inc., Philippine Junior Jaycees – UPV Chapter, UPV Palaban, UPV Kaakbay, UP Debate Circle, and UPV Marketing Society, Inc.
At 5:30 p.m. another candle-lighting will be held at the dormitories at UPV-Miag-ao.
On Tuesday UPV-Miag-ao already held a forum and film showing related to the Ampatuan massacre and press freedom.
Students and teachers under the Communication and Media Studies program organized them. NUJP national director Nestor Burgos spoke at the forum.
Last week NUJP-Iloilo, too, already led a social media campaign encouraging journalists and press freedom advocates to change their Facebook profile photos into personalized graphics bearing the theme.
Media organizations and press freedom advocates say the commemoration helps ensure media killings are not forgotten and the pursuit for justice continues.
