ILOILO – Several government officials in the city and province of Iloilo believe Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo made the right decision when she quit the Cabinet of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“She does not belong to that Cabinet,” said Rep. Arthur Defensor Jr. (3rd District).
Robredo’s decision was “correct, and I support that,” said Defensor. “She stands opposite the administration on many issues.”
Mayor Dennis Superficial of Santa Barbara town said there was nothing Robredo can do if the President does not want her attending Cabinet meetings anymore.
“Resigning was the only and natural recourse she has,” Superficial said.
But he added: “Dako man na nga disadvantage sa mga Ilonggo kay malapit si Robredo sa mga Ilonggo. Let us see kon ano ang developments.”
Meanwhile Councilor Plaridel Nava of Iloilo City thought it was “reasonable” and “logical,” considering that she and Duterte have “irreconcilable differences.”
“She can never be an alter-ego of the President because her beliefs and principles run counter to the policies of the Duterte administration,” said Nava.
Another city councilor, R Leone Gerochi, affirmed that Robredo made the right choice.
“A Cabinet position presumes trust and confidence,” he said. “If the President no longer trusts her or respects her enough to issue a formal written notice, her decision to resign is a logical, respectful and dignified course of action.”
He hopes Robredo may still push for one of her initiatives: making Pag-IBIG loans accessible to lower-income earners, including jeepney and tricycle drivers.
Having one of Duterte’s men as housing secretary can ensure “no conflict of personal interests, and public service will not be affected by the withdrawal of resources due to political differences,” said Gerochi.
Meanwhile Mayor John Tarrosa of Zarraga town believes Robredo’s resignation “will be good for both of them (Duterte and Robredo).”
“You really need the complete trust and confidence of the President as his alter-ego,” Tarrosa told Panay News.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog (through spokesperson Mark Piad) and Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. — Robredo’s allies in the Liberal Party — refused to comment./PN
