ILOILO – A group of senior high school students from Santa Barbara National Comprehensive High School (SBNCHS) has emerged as Asia-Pacific grand champions in a regional contest recognizing youth-led innovations in the fight against dengue.
The team, known as the Aedes Avengers, triumphed over competing groups from across the region in the Dengue Slayers Challenge 2.0, held during the 8th Asia Dengue Summit in Manila.
Representing the Philippines, the Ilonggo team’s victory highlights the power of youth-driven, science-based solutions in tackling pressing public health issues.
Composed of Monica S. Gerona, Roy Benedict U. Salanatin, and Res John T. Senibalo, and guided by mentor Dr. Maria Bella M. Vijar, the Aedes Avengers impressed judges with their comprehensive and community-centered dengue prevention campaign.
Their initiative combined scientific strategies with educational outreach to raise awareness and reduce dengue risks in their local community.
Before competing internationally, the group had already clinched the national title in the Master Dengue Slayer Challenge, securing their place as the country’s official delegate to the regional summit.
The team’s accomplishment was lauded by local officials during a courtesy visit to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, where they received commendations for their hard work and for bringing pride to the province.
The Aedes Avengers’ achievement is being hailed as a triumph for the youth of Iloilo and the Philippines — proving that with strong mentorship, civic engagement, and innovation, young people can lead the way in addressing global health threats like dengue./PN
