Iloilo in talks for a Maharlika league team next season

AFTER making waves in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), Iloilo could make a return to the regional basketball scene. It is currently in talks to participate in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said that Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation of La Filipina Uygongco Group of Companies executive vice president Norman Ramos have sent a letter of intent to join the league next season.

“I have already met with (Ramos) to discuss the requirements of the league,” Duremdes said. “The company willing to bankroll the squad showed keen interest in joining the MPBL.”

Duremdes added that the La Filipina Uygongco Group of Companies have agreed to follow the league requirements of at least three homegrown players and maximum of five former professional players.

The La Filipina Uygongco Group of Companies is involved in trading of agricultural raw materials being used in soybean meal, corn, wheat, and micro ingredients, among others.

Iloilo previously has a regional squad in the MBA in 1998, which carried the moniker Megavoltz.

If ever Iloilo’s participation will push through, they will become the second Visayan team in the league founded by Senator Manny Pacquiao aside from Cebu Sharks./PN
