ILOILO City – Local government units (LGUs) in the province of Iloilo are urged to comply with environmental laws, specifically Republic Act 9003 also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Office of the Ombudsman Western Visayas acting director Pio R. Dargantes, on Wednesday, reminded the representatives of various LGUs in the province about the different environmental laws, and the required actions to resolve their problems.
The towns of Sta. Barabara, Ajuy, Concepcion, Sara, and Banate in Iloilo are currently under investigation for alleged non-compliance with the law.
Arturo C. Cangrejo, the officer-in-charge of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), said that they are currently working to ensure that all towns are compliant with the law.
“This is something that we are watching because we have seen that currently, the Ombudsman is really keen on prosecuting and filing administrative cases to the towns that have violated the law,” he said,
“This is a wake-up call to our LGUs,” he added.
To initially help the municipalities, the provincial government on Wednesday distributed P100,000 worth of financial assistance each to 17 towns in the province, mainly to help the LGUs t safely close or rehabilitate their open dumpsites.
The beneficiaries include the towns of Sara, Banate, Concepcion, Ajuy, Sta. Barbara, Tubungan, Pototan, Cabatuan, New Lucena, Bingawan, Dueñas, Dumangas, Lambunao, San Enrique, Zarraga, Mina and Passi City.
Cangrejo said that they will give the same financial assistance to the rest of the remaining municipalities next year. (PNA)
