SECONDARY girl spikers from Iloilo clinched a twice-to-beat incentive in the 2018 WVPRISAA Meet after completing an elimination round sweep on Monday at the Iloilo Doctors’ College gym in Iloilo City.
The Ilonggas recovered from a first-set defeat to score 18-25, 25-16, 25-20 against Negros Occidental and finish the single round-robin eliminations with a 3-0 win-loss record. Negros got 2-1.
Iloilo took advantage of erroneous plays by Negros from second set onwards. The latter team was hurt by the limited court action of fever-stricken Marianne Sotomil.
Iloilo will have to win only once against Negros today to clinch the title and a spot in the National PRISAA Meet in Tagbilaran, Bohol. If Negros wins, a do-or-die finale will be held this afternoon.
ILOILO CAGERS DEFAULTED
Iloilo’s secondary boys basketball team suffered its first defeat – it was defaulted in the match against Capiz for failure to bring their tournament identification card on Sunday.
Basketball commissioner Jose Anselmo Tenorio told Panay News Iloilo still showed up without their ID even though he informed their head coach Vincent Conlu of the Meet rules beforehand.
“They were not penalized during the opening day (Saturday) but since they did it again, we have no other recourse but to impose the punishment,” Tenorio said. “WVPRISAA strictly requires teams to have their tournament IDs.”
Negros Occidental, meanwhile, cruised to its second win after defeating Aklan (0-2) 80-61 on Sunday.
In secondary girls basketball at the Iloilo Sports Complex on Sunday, Capiz debuted with a 62-40 victory over Iloilo.
In tertiary men’s category, Iloilo surged to a 2-0 start with wins over Aklan (87-53) on Sunday morning and Capiz (96-95, overtime) in the afternoon.
Negros Occidental recovered from an opening-day loss to Capiz 62-67 with a 101-43 win over Aklan./PN
