MANILA – Iloilo City is slated to serve as host to the anticipated matchup between crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings and Meralco Bolts in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup in January 2017.
The Kings-Bolts match will be held at the University of San Agustin (USA) Gymnasium on Jan. 14. It is one of the six out-of-town games scheduled in the All-Filipino Cup.
This marks the first time Kings and Bolts will play eachother since their epic 2016 Oppo PBA Governor’s Cup best-of-seven championship series won by Kings, 4-2.
Kings, even without center Gregory Slaughter for the rest of theconference, remains a formidable team with the return of Japeth Aguilar, LA Tenorio, Sol Mercado, Earl Scottie Thompson, Joe Devance, and Mark Caguioa.
The Tim Cone-mentored squad has also four newcomers in the team inveteran guard Juan Paolo Taha and rookies Kevin Ferrer, Raymon Jamito, and 6-foot-11 Jericho de Guzman.
Bolts also kept the core of its team with the return of Clifford Hodge, Christopher Newsome, Baser Amer, Jared Dillinger, Bryan Faundo, and rookies Eduardo Daquioag and Jonathan Grey.
The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Bolts player Anjo Caram and Ken Bono, who both hail from Iloilo City, and Reynel Hugnatan and Justin Chua, who are from Bacolod City.
This marks the first time in a long while that the PBA will hold an official game in Iloilo City. The last time the USA Gym played host to the league was in April 2013 when TNT Katropa defeated GlobalPort Batang Pier, 94-84./PN
