MANILA – The Cignal HD Spikers recovered from slow start to beat the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors, 20-25, 25-10, 25-20 in the 2017 Belo-Philippine Superliga Invitational on Saturday at the Malolos Sports Complex in Bulacan.
Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rachel Anne Daquis spearheaded the HD Spikers offense as they got back on the winning track to move up to second place with a 2-1 win-loss slate.
The HD Spikers, which underwent a massive roster overhaul during the offseason, is coming from an 18-25, 26-24, 14-25, 25-20, 15-12 defeat to league-leader Petron Blaze Spikers on Thursday.
After dropping the opening set, the HD Spikers went on a strong 8-1 run in the second frame to build a 14-2 lead. The edge later grew to 20-4 before a mini run by the Lady Realtors, but Gonzaga and Daquis ended the set with back-to-back hits.
The Lady Realtors got the early lead in the third set but the HD Spikers quickly bounced back to keep the match close the entire frame before Daquis clinched the victory with an off-the-block hit.
The HD Spikers went for the kill early in the fourth frame behind Daquis, Gonzaga and Maica Morada for a 12-6 lead. With the Lady Realtors having no response, the HD Spikers easily ended the match behind Honey Royce Tubino and Chie Saet.
“Unlike in our first few games, medyo okay na yung pinakita nung second unit sa second set,” said HD Spikers mentor George Pascua. “Importante kasi ang jelling at chemistry sa loob.”
This marks the second straight defeat of the Lady Realtors, which is composed of players from the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers, to slip to a 0-2 slate tying fellow newcomer Cocolife Asset Managers./PN
