TEAM Iloilo’s perfect run in the 2018 Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) on Tour came to an end after dropping its quarterfinals game at the Ichthus Beach Resort in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur.
Dhannalyn Mae Demontaño and Jackielyn Estoquia – both mainstays of the University of San Agustin – failed to sustain their strong start on Jan. 28 to suffer a 22-20, 19-21, 9-15 loss to Perlas Lady Spikers 1’s Angelique Gervacio and Charo Soriano.
After snatching the opening set, Demontaño and Estoquia nearly pulled off the upset in the second but lost its lead in the latter part, allowing Gervacio and Soriano to force a deciding set.
Ilongga Nerissa Bautista and Jem Gutierrez of Philippine Army Lady Troopers also failed to advance to the semifinals after losing in the quarterfinals in straight sets.
Negrense Bea Tan and Amanda Villanueva of Perlas Lady Spikers’ 2, meanwhile, settled for a runner-up finish after a 15-21, 21-23 loss to Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers 1’s Judy Caballejo and Camille Abanto.
University of Santo Tomas Junior Tigresses’ Babylove Barbon and Genesa Eslador, meanwhile, stunned the pair of Gervacio and Soriano 21-19, 21-5 to take home the third place trophy.
For winning the championship, Caballejo and Abanto took home P50,000 each. Every member of the Tan-Villanueva and Barbon-Eslador pairs received P30,000 and P20,000 each, respectively./PN
