MANILA – Seventeen-year-old Ilonggo cager Ryan Calama-an is taking a shot and “exploring possibilities”, joining a tryout for potential players of the NCAA juniors basketball team De La Salle-Greenhills Greenies on Monday in Mandaluyong City.
The 6-foot-4 Calama-an and teammate Marvin Cuerbo are flying to Manila in the hopes of notching a spot in the La Salle Greenies, the junior affiliate team of collegiate titan St. Benilde Blazers.
Calama-an is a varsity player of the Sta. Clarita International School and played a pivotal role in his team’s championship bids in the 2016 Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) and 2017 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meets. He was also a member of the Iloilo squad that took home gold in the Visayas leg and silver in the national level of the 2016 Batang PBA tournament.
Even Filipino basketball hall-of-famer Jojo Lastimosa noticed the raw potential of Calama-an when the young cager competed in the PBA Legends’ exhibition game held in Cabatuan, Iloilo in 2015. Lastimosa offered the Ilonggo a slot in the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws, but Calama-an politely declined the invitation admitting he was not yet ready to step up his game.
Sta. Clarita head coach Rodel Camacho said in an interview with Panay News that he is more than excited about the opportunity for Calama-an and Cuerbo to strut their wares with the Greenies.
“They have accepted the invitation from the LGH to attend their tryout,” said Camacho. “Let’s see if the boys are ready to play in the NCAA. I wish them luck and I will not hinder in case they are chosen.”
The Leon, Iloilo-native Calama-an was discovered and recruited by Camacho in 2015. The lanky forward has since developed his three-point shooting.
“Aside from his three-point shooting, Ryan’s ability to drive to the basket with his long arms is one of his assets. He is also a good dribbler for his size,” said Camacho.
“He is very coachable. When his shooting is off, he can pass the ball to his teammates. He has developed well so I am sure that he can adapt well with the LGH,” he added.
Calama-an is set to lead the Team Iloilo, which will be the representing WVRAA in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique later this month./PN
