MANILA – Filipino wushu fighter Arnel Roa Mandal is slated to receive a P1-million cash reward for winning a gold medal in the 8th Wushu-Sanda World Cup recently at Xi’an, China.
According to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez, the Iloilo City-native Mandal will receive P1 million for his gold medal feat as stated in the revised Incentive Act.
Mandal claimed the gold medal in the men’s -52 kilogram division event after dominating India’s Uchit Sharma in two of their three round encounters in the championship match.
Just like Mandal, Baguio City-native Divine Masadao Wally will also receive the same amount for winning the gold medal in the female -48 kilogram division as her finals opponent Farida Elsodany of Egypt pulled out due to injury.
Hergie Bacyadan, meanwhile, will be receiving P700,000 for winning a silver medal in the female -65 kilogram category while Ilonggo Francisco Solis has P200,000 for his bronze medal feat.
“Ito ay nakasaad sa batas na magbibigay ng cash incentives sa mga atleta natin na nanalo ng medalya,” said Ramirez. “They deserve to be feted for giving honor and prestige to the country.”
The Wushu Federation of the Philippines-backed delegation finished the tournament at third place with two gold, one silver and one bronze medals, behind overall champion China and runner-up Iran.
The feat of the four-man Philippine team is the country’s best so far in the tournament participated by 72 athletes from 27 countries since its 2-1-0 medal haul during the 2006 edition./PN
