MANILA – One of the veteran players of Kia Picanto promised to lead the team to a respectable campaign in the PBA Philippine Cup, which starts on Dec. 17.
Father Time may be catching up on him but Iloilo City native guard Ronald Tubid believes he could provide the leadership needed by the team undermined by many due to questionable trade deals.
“As the captain ball, ang sabi ko sa players na hindi kami puwedeng umasa sa iilan lang, dapat share the load,” Tubid said. “Hindi ko naman hinahanap iyong scoring. Ang ano ko lang maturuan ko iyong mga bata.”
“I know this team, gutom, so kailangan iyong gutom niyo, hindi iyong sobrang aggressive. Kailangan aggressive, pero organized aggressive. Saka kailangan mag-invest muna sa defense, sa practice,” he added.
A former University of the East Red Warrior, Tubid said he was already trying to come to terms with his expected lengthy minutes with Kia after being sparingly used while at San Miguel Beermen.
“Ang tagal ko nang hindi nakalaro ng mahaba-haba. Sabi ko sa coach, dahan-dahanin ko muna iyong rhythm ko,” the 36-year-old said.
“Dagdag responsibilidad, kaya ako mismo, pinu-push ko sarili ko para hindi nakakahiya, kasi i-preach mo, tapos hindi mo ginagawa? ” he added.
“Happy naman ako. First two weeks, medyo hirap sa adjustment, pero ngayon nakaka-adjust na, nagiging happy na going to practice,” added the seven-time PBA champion.
Kia Picanto cannot be underestimated, what with Tubid’s promise that the team will gut it out with an unconventional style of play.
“I’m not going to promise anything pero lalaban iyong Kia,” he said. “Iyon nga iyong kagandahan kasi underdog e. Kia will surprise other teams na magre-relax against us.”/PN
