ILOILO City – Ten barangays with the most number of dengue cases may be subjected to indoor residue spraying, too.

City Health Office (CHO) head Dr. Bernard Caspe said they are conducting vector surveillance in the following villages:
* MV Hechanova, Balabago, Sambag, Quintin Salas, and MH Del Pilar in Jaro district
* Bakhaw, Bolilao and Guzman-Jesena in Mandurriao
* Jereos in La Paz, and
* Calaparan in Arevalo.
Indoor residue spraying will be conducted in these barangays if they are “positive” for Aedes mosquitoes, said Caspe.

The procedure involves the application of long-acting chemical insecticides on the walls and roofs of houses and domestic animal shelters to kill the adult vector mosquitoes that land and rest on these surfaces.

Indoor spraying in all households in Barangay Benedicto, Jaro, started yesterday.
Barangay Benedicto a high-risk area for dengue, Zika and chikungunya diseases — all mosquito-borne — according to the Department of Health.
Three cases of Zika infection have been recorded in the barangay.

The index case was a 45-year-old woman. The two others were members of her household.

Indoor residue spraying in Benedicto may last four to five days to cover all the houses in the barangays nine sitios, Caspe said.
Twelve teams have been formed to conduct the spraying. Each team is expected to cover 50 to 70 houses.

Health officials have been advising the public for years to employ the 4S strategy to combat the spread of dengue.
4S includes search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; self-protection measures; seek early consultation; and say no to indiscriminate fogging./PN
