ILOILO City –Depression is the cause of most suicide cases, according to a Department of Health (DOH) official.
“Thirty to 90 percent of depressive disorder casesleads to suicide,”Dr. May Ann Sta. Lucia, regional coordinator for violence and injury prevention program, told Panay News.“Suicideis the last symptom of chronic depression.”
But this can be prevented, Sta. Lucia said.

On Thursday, a 16-year-old girl in Concepcion, Iloilo committed suicide.

Her mother found her hanging from a tree at the back of their house around 10:30 a.m.A rope was tied around her neck.

That morning, the mother told the police, she asked her daughter to hang the clothes they just finished washing.

“Her mother wondered what was taking her so long,” Chief Inspector Jonathan Pinuela, Concepcion police chief, told Panay News. “She went to their backyard and found her daughter lifeless.”

It was not immediately clear where the girl got the rope.

Pinuela said they suspect the girl may have been depressed when her teacher prohibited her from playing basketball at their high school after having been absent for a week.

The girl was rushed to the rural health unit but she was declared dead on arrival.

Pinuela said the parents refused to have the girl’s body autopsied.
According to Sta. Lucia, at least 800,000 people worldwide commit suicide each year.
But this can be prevented through connection and communication.

“It’s important for a suicidal or depressed person to feel connected with loved ones or support groups,” said the health official. “Communication is vital, too, for it makes them feel they are not alone.”

On Sept. 10, the DOH Region 6 held a motorcade to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day.

Hanging oneself and drinking pesticide are among the common means to commitsuicide.

This is mainly due to the fact that “we are an agricultural country” and the items used “are commonly seen inside the house,” said Sta. Lucia.
Among Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries, the Philippines has the lowest suicide rate, the World Health Organization said.
The Philippines also ranked 150th out of 170 countriesacross the world in terms of suicide rates.

In 2012, the estimated number of suicides in the country was 2,558 (550 females, 2008 males) — a suicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000 population.
This is lower than the annual global age-standardized suicide rate of 11.4 per 100,000 population (15 for males and eight for females).
Also on Sept. 10, the DOH central office and the Natasha Goulborn Foundation officially opened the Hopeline Project.

Hopeline is a phone-based counseling service available 24/7 to any individual suffering from crisis and depression. It aims to bridge the gap in mental health services in the country.

The 24/7 Hopeline hotlines were (02) 804-HOPE (4673); 0917-558-HOPE (4673); and 2919 (toll-free number for Globe and TM subscribers).
The DOH Region 6 also has three 24/7 hotline numbers that may accommodate calls from depressed people: 0998-532-4047 (Smart), 0917-775-9256 (Globe) and 0925-546-9919 (Sun)./PN
