MANILA – League leaders San Miguel Beermen and Magnolia Hotshots were set to miss their key players due to injuries midway in the elimination round of the PBA Philippine Cup.
Three-time defending champion Beermen will be without Alex Cabagnot in the next three weeks. The star guard sustained plantar fasciitis, a foot injury causing excruciating pain on the heel.
Hotshots will also miss Paul Lee for a couple games. Lee sustained an ankle sprain during their 91-83 win over TNT KaTropa last Saturday.
Beermen head coach Leo Austria said the 35-year-old Filipino-American Cabagnot will be reevaluated next week to determine if he can return much earlier. His injury does not require surgery.
“According to the doctor, Alex will be missing three to four weeks, and probably next month pa siya makakalaro,” said Austria.
“We’re not in a hurry for him to get back. What we want is for him to get to 100 percent,” he added.
Beermen heavily felt Cabagnot’s absence during its 96-100 loss to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings on Sunday, when it scrambled on who to take the shot during the waning seconds.
Lee, who had undergone a knee procedure in the offseason, failed to finish the game after getting hurt in the third-quarter rebound scramble with KaTropa’s Jeth Troy Rosario.
“Iyon ang pinakamaganda doon: nakita natin iyong strength ng team,” Lee said. “Maganda iyon para sa amin na noong nawala ako, pinakita ng buong team na kaya nilang manalo. Positive na result para sa amin.”
“Napakamalas lang kasi maganda na iyong laro, maganda na iyong tinatakbo ng team. Pero wala naman tayong magagawa doon,” he added. “Hopefully makabalik tayo agad.”
Beermen and Hotshots were currently tied on top of the standings (5-1). The sister teams under the San Miguel Corp. umbrella were set to face each other on Feb. 4./PN
